Maurice “Moe” Mike Lazaridis is a Canadian businessman and co-founder of BlackBerry Limited. He served as the company’s co-CEO until he stepped down on January 22, 22, 2012. He is now the Vice-Chairman and Board Member of BlackBerry.
Lazaridis was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Greek parents. He and his family moved to Canada when he was five years old. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1984. It was there that he met Douglas Fregin, with whom he would later co-found BlackBerry. Lazaridis is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario.
He has been honored with the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the Global Leadership Award from the World Economic Forum, and the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Leadership Award, among others. In March 2020, Lazaridis pledged $50 million to the University of Waterloo to establish the Lazaridis Institute for Systems Biology and Health. In May 2020, it was announced that Lazaridis would be donating $130 million to the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. In October 2020, it was announced that Lazaridis had donated $10 million to the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering to establish the Maurice “Moe” Lazaridis Professorship in Quantum Information Science.
In December 2020, it was announced that Lazaridis had donated $10 million to the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry and Vision Science. In January 2021, it was announced that Lazaridis had donated $10 million to the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science. Lazaridis is married to Ophelia Lazaridis and they have three children.
